Leonid Group has been retained by a global, technology-driven multinational organization to search for a Director of Export Compliance to lead and further develop its worldwide export compliance function.
This is a senior strategic leadership role responsible for setting global export compliance strategy, leading international teams, and ensuring robust compliance with U.S. and international export control regulations across complex products, technologies, and markets.
The role combines strategic leadership, operational governance, regulatory engagement, and cross-functional influence. The successful candidate will play a critical role in strengthening and evolving a mature compliance framework while ensuring the organization remains agile in a rapidly changing regulatory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and continuously develop a global export compliance framework supporting the business across all functions and geographies.
- Define and lead export compliance strategy in line with applicable regulations (including U.S. and non-U.S. export control regimes and sanctions frameworks).
- Lead and develop globally distributed teams, ensuring consistent standards, high performance, and strong business partnerships.
- Drive cross-functional programs and initiatives, influencing stakeholders at senior levels across legal, supply chain, engineering, sales, and operations.
- Establish, maintain, and enhance policies, procedures, and governance to ensure ongoing regulatory compliance.
- Oversee operational export compliance processes, including:
- Classification
- License determination and applications
- Restricted party and embargo screening
- Transactional controls and oversight mechanisms
- Act as a senior advisor to the business on complex export control and sanctions matters.
- Monitor regulatory developments and ensure timely assessment, communication, and implementation of new requirements.
- Lead engagement with regulatory authorities where required, including audits, inquiries, disclosures, and advisory interactions.
- Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate export compliance risks across products, technologies, and markets.
Candidate Profile
- 15+ years of professional experience, with 10+ years in trade compliance, and deep specialization in export controls.
- 5+ years in senior leadership roles, managing and developing internationally distributed teams.
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Export control regulations and licensing regimes
- Regulatory interpretation and application in complex business environments
- Interaction with government or regulatory authorities
- Proven ability to operate at both strategic and operational levels in large, matrixed organizations.
- Demonstrated track record of building, scaling, or transforming compliance programs in complex, global environments.
- Background in or exposure to government or regulatory bodies is a plus, but not required.
